Repent even if you sin a hundred times
Narrated Abu Huraira:
I heard the Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) saying:
إِنَّ عَبْدًا أَصَابَ ذَنْبًا ـ وَرُبَّمَا قَالَ أَذْنَبَ ذَنْبًا ـ فَقَالَ رَبِّ أَذْنَبْتُ ـ وَرُبَّمَا قَالَ أَصَبْتُ ـ فَاغْفِرْ لِي
"If somebody commits a sin and then says, 'O my Lord! I have sinned, please forgive me!'
فَقَالَ رَبُّهُ أَعَلِمَ عَبْدِي أَنَّ لَهُ رَبًّا يَغْفِرُ الذَّنْبَ وَيَأْخُذُ بِهِ غَفَرْتُ لِعَبْدِي
Thereupon his Lord says, 'My slave has known that he has a Lord who forgives sins and punishes for it, I therefore have forgiven my slave (his sins).'
ثُمَّ مَكَثَ مَا شَاءَ اللَّهُ
Then he remains without committing any sin for a while as long as Allaah Wills
ثُمَّ أَصَابَ ذَنْبًا أَوْ أَذْنَبَ ذَنْبًا
and then again commits a sin
فَقَالَ رَبِّ أَذْنَبْتُ ـ أَوْ أَصَبْتُ ـ آخَرَ فَاغْفِرْهُ
and says, 'O my Lord, I have committed another sin, please forgive me,'
فَقَالَ أَعَلِمَ عَبْدِي أَنَّ لَهُ رَبًّا يَغْفِرُ الذَّنْبَ وَيَأْخُذُ بِهِ غَفَرْتُ لِعَبْدِي
Thereupon Allah says, 'My slave has known that he has a Lord who forgives sins and punishes for it, I therefore have forgiven my slave (his sin).
ثُمَّ مَكَثَ مَا شَاءَ اللَّهُ
Then he remains without committing any another sin for a while as long as Allaah Wills
ثُمَّ أَذْنَبَ ذَنْبًا ـ وَرُبَّمَا قَالَ أَصَابَ ذَنْبًا ـ قَالَ قَالَ رَبِّ أَصَبْتُ ـ أَوْ أَذْنَبْتُ ـ آخَرَ فَاغْفِرْهُ لِي
and then commits another sin (for the third time) and says, 'O my Lord, I have committed another sin, please forgive me,'
فَقَالَ أَعَلِمَ عَبْدِي أَنَّ لَهُ رَبًّا يَغْفِرُ الذَّنْبَ وَيَأْخُذُ بِهِ غَفَرْتُ لِعَبْدِي ـ ثَلاَثًا ـ فَلْيَعْمَلْ مَا شَاءَ ".
Thereupon Allah says, 'My slave has known that he has a Lord Who forgives sins and punishes for it I therefore have forgiven My slave (his sin), so let him do what he likes."
Sahiih al-Bukhaari hadiith No. 7507
وقال النووي
al-Nawawi said:
هذه الأحاديث ظاهرة في الدلالة على قبول التوبة من الذنوب وإن تكررت الذنوب والتوبة مائة مرة أو ألف أو أكثر
These ahadiith are evidence that repentance from sins is accepted even if the sin and the repentance is repeated one hundred times or a thousand times or more
ولو تاب عن الجميع توبة واحدة بعد جميعها صحت توبته
And if one seeks repentance once after all the sins he has committed after having committed them, the repentance will be valid
ثم قال ولا يختص قبول توبته بوقت دون وقت
Then he said: The acceptance of repentance is not limited to any particular time
