Hikmah - Wisdom
He gives wisdom to whom He wills, and whoever has been given wisdom has certainly been given much good. And none will remember except those of understanding.
[Qur'aan 2:269]
The scholars have differed in regards to what the word hikmah [wisdom] means here in this Verse. The following is a list of the different understandings of the scholars.
It refers to the Qur'aan and knowledge of that which has been abrogated in it, that which abrogates, the clear and unclear Verses, that which is halaal and that which is haraam, etc.
It refers to doing that which is right and saying what is correct.
It refers to knowledge of Diin [Religion].
It refers to understanding.
It refers to fear [of Allaah] because that is the essence of everything.
It refers to Prophethood.
Imaam al-Tabari says that all of the sayings which have been listed enter into hikmah because to be correct in matters requires that one has understanding and knowledge of them and one recognizes the matters. And the one who reaches the correct decisions based on his understanding in his affairs has understanding, fears Allaah, and is a faqiih and scholar.
